Cops: 4-year-old brings nine bags of pot to school

By msnbc.com staff

A 4-year-old boy?brought nine bags of pot to his elementary school and pulled them out during snack time, police said.

A teacher at Hanover Elementary School in Meriden, Conn., alerted officials to the drug early Tuesday afternoon, according to a report in the Record-Journal. ?Detective Lt. Mark Walerysiak, a police spokesman, told the newspaper that the child turned over the bags to his teacher.

Walerysiak could not be reached for comment by msnbc.com on Friday.

“The case remains under investigation,” Walerysiak told the Record-Journal. The Department of Children and Families “was called in to also conduct an investigation.”

School Superintendent Mark D. Benigni called the event ?isolated incident,? the newspaper said.

?Our concern is for the 4-year-old student who had no knowledge of what he was bringing to school,” Benigni said. “The student is safe and we will continue to ensure a safe learning environment to all of our students.”

He said the teacher was?close to the child when he pulled the bags out of his coat pocket. No other student was involved, the Record-Journal reported.

Benigni told the newspaper that the child was not at fault. “This is clearly an adult issue,” he said.

‘Teen Mom 2′ star hospitalized with kidney issue

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

MTV

Jenelle Evans’ new year hasn’t been the happiest so far.

The “Teen Mom 2″ star was hospitalized with a kidney infection last night, another in what has been a series of unfortunate developments for the single mom — some legal, some health-related.

Her manager confirmed to E! News that a doctor prescribed antibiotics to treat the ailment and Evans went home today. She’s feeling much better now, the rep added.

“Hospitals suck,” Evans tweeted late Tuesday.

MORE from E!: Jenelle on recent arrests: ‘They are trying to charge me with things out of spite’

Evans was in and out of the doctor’s office earlier this month while she battled strep throat, and in October she injured her wrist in a car accident. She was also diagnosed with an ovarian cyst last July.

Additionally, the volatile MTV star has been in and out of custody, most recently getting arrested on Jan. 10 for allegedly threatening an old roommate and again six days later for allegedly violating an order of protection against her.

Evans is due in court on Feb. 6.

Following last night’s episode?of “Teen Mom 2,” which featured Evans having a bit of a meltdown, she received a tweet accusing her of being “seriously psychotic.” Evans wrote, “Sooooo I’m guessing u r all watching the fight :/ damn,” and, to the one who called her psychotic, she tweeted, “bi polar disorder sweetheart.”

E! recap: Jenelle’s fighting mad on ‘Teen Mom 2′

“Im already emotional right now, and crying for @PBandJenelley_1 right now. :( How hard,” wrote “16 and Pregnant’s” Ashley Salazar.

“@ashleyslzr awhhh, it’s alright. I made it through. :) I’m on my medication now and my life has change tremendously,” Evans wrote back.

Fellow “Teen Mom” star Amber Portwood also suffers from bipolar disorder.

Gingrich unloads on Romney, ads, in Florida speech (AP)

MOUNT DORA, Fla. ? Newt Gingrich on Thursday dramatically ramped up his attacks on Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts governor is guilty of lies, desperation and hypocrisy that should make “every American angry.”

Gingrich, the former House speaker, said he was infuriated by a barrage of attack ads that are blistering him on Florida TV stations ahead of Tuesday’s GOP presidential primary. Most are funded by an outside organization backing Romney, but some are from Romney’s own campaign. Unable to match Romney’s money machine, Gingrich implored Florida Republicans to punish his chief rival for what Gingrich called callously dishonest ads.

“This is the desperate last stand of the old order,” Gingrich told an outdoor crowd of more than 1,000 northwest of Orlando. “This is the kind of gall they have to think we’re so stupid and we’re so timid.”

The nature and volume of the attack ads are similar to those that badly damaged Gingrich in Iowa a month ago.

“I think all the weight of his negative advertising and all the weight of his dishonesty has hurt us some,” Gingrich said. But “I am not going to allow the moneyed interests that are buying those ads to come in here and to come into other states to misinform people and then to think we are too dumb to fight back.”

Romney steered clear of his rival during a subsequent campaign appearance.

Gingrich later told reporters he decided to sharpen his criticisms after Romney’s tax returns showed investments held in Cayman Island accounts, the government-backed mortgage company Freddie Mac and other entities.

“Here’s a guy who owns Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae stock,” Gingrich said. “He owns a Goldman Sachs subsidiary, which is foreclosing on Floridians. And on that front he decides to lie about my career? There’s something about the hypocrisy that should make every American angry.”

Romney has been hammering Gingrich for consulting work he performed for Freddie Mac and telling Florida voters that Gingrich was paid by a company that contributed to the state’s poor housing market.

The acerbic remarks came three days after Gingrich took a much more moderate tone in a televised debate in Tampa, when Romney sharpened his own attacks. Gingrich strongly hinted he will be more aggressive in a CNN debate scheduled for Thursday night in Jacksonville.

Romney, meanwhile, toured a Jacksonville factory that is closing because of the economy before he addressed several hundred people gathered outside. He acknowledged that the live audience at Thursday’s debate may be fairly raucous, a dynamic that seems to favor Gingrich and his populist, us-against-the-media and us-against-the-establishment style.

“There may be some give and take,” Romney said. “That’s always fun and entertaining, I know. If you all could get there, we’d love to see you all there cheering.”

In his remarks, Romney criticized President Barack Obama and steered clear of Gingrich. He called Obama’s administration a “Groundhog Day” presidency in which nothing gets better.

Polls suggest the Florida primary is close, coming 10 days after Gingrich beat Romney by 12 percentage points in South Carolina. Asked if he felt Florida was slipping toward Romney, Gingrich said, “I feel that it’s useful for people to look at the totality of his record and ask yourself, `How can a guy who literally owns stock in a Goldman Sachs investment fund that forecloses on Floridians run the ads he’s been running?’”

Goldman Sachs employees and their families contributed $367,200 to Romney’s campaign through Sept. 30, his largest source of campaign contributions, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul also were participating in Thursday’s debate, the final one before the GOP presidential primary in Florida on Tuesday. But both candidates have set their sights elsewhere and have largely stayed away from the Romney-Gingrich drama.

Whoever wins Florida will score something no one has yet claimed in a tumultuous primary season: a second victory. The first three contests have been won by three different candidates. Only Paul has yet to score a win.

The hits for Romney and Gingrich were coming from many directions.

The “super” political action committees backing them have spent more than $10 million combined on ads to date in Florida, far more than their respective campaigns. The Romney-leaning Restore Our Future has spent $8.8 million in ads as of late Tuesday, bringing to $14 million the total spent on ads supporting Romney in the state. That doesn’t include money already spent on radio and Internet advertising.

As of late Tuesday, the Gingrich-backing Winning Our Future had booked $1.8 million in television ads in Florida, a check made possible by a new donation from Miriam Adelson. She and her husband, Sheldon, this month gave $5 million apiece to the group, which supports Gingrich but legally must remain independent.

Santorum, meanwhile, seemed to be recognizing that he stood almost no chance of winning Florida. He and his advisers planned no advertising in the state and instead were focused on raising money and calling potential supporters in upcoming states. He all but gave up trying to woo a network of pastors and was scaling back his schedule in Florida.

Chuck Laudner, an influential adviser who helped Santorum score an upset victory in the Iowa caucuses, was returning to the Midwest to start piecing together coalitions in Missouri and Minnesota. Both states have media markets that overlap with Iowa, where Santorum proved to be the big story.

Paul, virtually absent from Florida except for appearances built around the debates, was concentrating instead on caucus states where his loyal backers can carry a louder voice.

Alec Baldwin Says He Found Love After He Gave Up, Would ‘Be Heaven’ To Have More Kids (omg!)

Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Thomas attend the 10th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation's 'An Enduring Vision' benefit at Cipriani Wall Street, NYC, on October 26, 2011 -- Getty Images

Alec Baldwin would love to expand his family.

While discussing his happiness with girlfriend Hilaria Thomas on “Piers Morgan Tonight” on Wednesday, the British host asked the “30 Rock” star if he’d like to have more children.

PLAY IT NOW: Alec Baldwin Reveals His Biggest Professional Regret To Be Never Learning To Sing

“Have I thought about having more kids? Oh sure, that would be great, that would be heaven, that would be fantastic,” Alec told Piers, who two months ago welcomed a new daughter to his own British brood.

Alec then went on to make a joke about his own potential plans to have more children later in life. (His daughter Ireland, with ex-wife Kim Basinger, is now 16.)

“As my friend said to me, ‘When you have children, typically in a second marriage, when you’re older and you get married again to a woman who would have children, you must always remember that you make sure [the children] attend a college where the commencement ceremonies are held in a facility with a wheelchair accessible ramp,’” Alec added tongue-in-cheek.

The actor also addressed dating a younger woman – Hilaria, a yoga instructor, is 27, while he is 53.

Alec revealed he actually sought advice from Tony Bennett, who is married to a much younger woman by several decades, wife Susan Crow.

“I said to Tony, ‘I’m dating a woman who is… younger than I am — she’s a lot younger than I am — and I sometimes think about that and I know, Tony, you’re with Susan and you’re quite a bit older than her,’” Alec recounted. “And he looked at me and he goes, ‘Yeah, people say that to me all the time and I say to them, ‘Consider the alternative.’”

The “30 Rock” star said he is “very, very happy” in his relationship and admitted his love actually fit in with an old saying – love will find you when you stop looking.

“It is true what people always say, and it’s tough to make your way to that place, I guess, where you stop looking,” Alec said. “I was married and I was with somebody for 10 years and then after I got divorced, I dated people and I had one girlfriend for several years… and right before I met Hilaria… I did lay in my bed and say, ‘This is it. I’m gonna be alone for the rest of my life, I’m gonna die alone in this apartment in this bed, I’ll have my friends, I’ll have Twitter, I’ll have Words with Friends, I’ll have my New Yorker subscription… I’ll have my quiet, unhappy life, and then right when I put it all on the shelf, and it was over… I walked into a restaurant… and I met this woman who is probably one of the greatest people I’ve ever met in my life.”

Apple doubles iPhone sales in 1Q (AP)

NEW YORK ? The iPhone is taking over Apple.

For the first time, the device that changed how people use mobile phones, accounts for more than half of the behemoth company’s sales.

Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011, vastly exceeding analyst estimates and propelling the company to record quarterly results.

The phone accounted for 53 percent of Apple’s revenue in the quarter. Though it has other hit products, like MacBooks and the iPad, they can’t keep up with the iPhone, whose sales more than doubled over last year from an already high level.

The sales mean Apple is set to regain the position it briefly held earlier last year of being the world’s largest maker of smartphones. Nokia Corp., the earlier No. 1, in transition to a new generation of smartphones, and more recent competitor Samsung Electronics Co. has announced preliminary figure of 35 million smartphones sold in the October to December period.

October saw Apple launching the iPhone 4S in the U.S. and some other countries. The phone was delayed for a few months, which meant that Apple’s results for the July to September quarter were uncharacteristically tepid.

It came back with a vengeance in the holiday season. On Tuesday, Apple said net income in the fiscal first quarter, which ended Dec. 31, was $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per share. That was up 118 percent from $6 billion, or $6.43 per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $10.04 per share for the latest quarter, Apple’s fiscal first.

Revenue was $46.33 billion, up 73 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $38.9 billion.

“It was a pristine quarter,” said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall. “The investment community has never seen a company like this, inside or outside technology.”

The stellar performance could re-establish Apple as the world’s most valuable company, again toppling Exxon Mobil Corp. Apple first unseated Exxon last summer, and the two have been trading places since then.

Apple shares rose $30.67, or 7.3 percent, to $451.08 in extended trading, after the company released its results. If that rally sticks in Wednesday’s regular trading sessions, Apple’s market value will be hovering around $420 billion. Exxon’s market value stood at $417.9 billion Tuesday, while Apple’s was $391.9 billion at the end of regular trading.

Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads in the quarter, again more than doubling sales over the same quarter last year. The November launch of Amazon.com Inc.’s $199 Kindle Fire tablet didn’t appear to put much of a dent in the iPad’s sales, as some analysts predicted it would.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company expects earnings of $8.50 per share in the current quarter, and sales of $32.5 billion. Both figures are above the average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet, even though Apple usually low-balls its estimates.

The Cupertino, Calif. company ended the quarter with a cash balance of a staggering $97.6 billion. That’s more than enough to buy Citigroup Inc. outright, or issue a special dividend of $100 per Apple share.

For years, investors have been frustrated with Apple’s unwillingness to put the cash to use, but complaints have been muted as Apple continues to generate record-breaking results and as the stock price keeps rising. Apple executives have said the cash hoard gives the company flexibility to make acquisitions and long-term supply deals.

Apple’s results lifted shares of smaller companies that supply chips for the iPhone, like TriQuint Semiconductor, up 7.7 percent, Cirrus Logic Inc., up 6.8 percent, Broadcom Corp., up 4.2 percent, and Skyworks Solutions Inc., up 3.7 percent.

Apple co-founder and longtime CEO Steve Jobs died Oct. 5, just as the record-breaking quarter started.

New RIM CEO Can’t Save the BlackBerry (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Investors at RIM — the company that makes the BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry PlayBook tablet — have been pushing the company for awhile now to get rid of its two co-ceos, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, on acount of their complete failure to adapt to the changing market. In a nutshell, Apple’s iPhone caught them off-guard; and not only did they fail to respond appropriately, they failed to even realize that there was a problem until it was too late.

Well, RIM’s replaced its CEOs now, on account of the last two resigned. And according to Reuters, it’s got a new one now, former Seimens AG exec Thorsten Heins. He’s been given a year and a half by investors to shake things up, and turn the company around from having to write off $485 million in unsold BlackBerry PlayBooks to being able to write off its former competitors.

The problem with this plan? It’s still too late for RIM. The company’s …

Not in the game anymore

“At the very core of RIM … is the innovation,” says Heins, in a video interview posted to YouTube. “We always think ahead.” But as the graphs posted by Nielsen show, RIM’s customers are the ones thinking ahead, by switching to non-BlackBerry smartphones. Almost 15 percent of all current smartphone owners that Nielsen surveyed own a BlackBerry, but only 6 percent of smartphone buyers last quarter chose one.

The BlackBerry Torch was poorly thought-out and panned by reviewers, and the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has seen multiple huge sales as RIM’s tried to unload its inventory. It still doesn’t even let you check email without owning a BlackBerry smartphone, and the long-awaited Android App Player is still missing. And the reason RIM’s so far behind is because …

Its corporate culture is dysfunctional

Maybe you’re skeptical of the tell-all letter an anonymous RIM exec sent to Boy Genius Report, or of the two other letters it got from RIM insiders. Maybe you think they’re just upset about something, or the problems are exaggerated, or it’s no worse than at the company that you work for. That’s okay. A company’s performance in the marketplace isn’t determined by how many frustrated letters its employees write, to people they feel will actually listen to them.

On the other hand, when outsiders like Jamie Murai run up against RIM’s corporate culture, they get a bad impression of it too. And when RIM can’t attract app developers like him to write for its gadgets, it might be time for the company to …

Consider its audience

I don’t just mean “developers, developers, developers, developers.” I mean actual people, and not corporate IT departments. (Even if Mitt Romney thinks that corporations are people too.)

It didn’t take much to wow people in 2005. And the same features that made BlackBerry smartphones attractive to individual buyers, like instant email and great hardware keyboards, made them attractive to corporate buyers as well. Much of RIM’s growth has been driven by the corporate market.

But people are starting to use their own gadgets at work now, or even choose iPads for deployment at their companies. The corporate world’s starting to realize that by pretending it can make decisions without having any emotions about them, it’s missing out on the most powerful, most useful hardware and apps.

Those aren’t made by RIM anymore. And it’s too late for RIM to realize that.

Hello

Hello, im new to the forum, even though i have had this account since 2010. I made it awhile ago but forgot I had it, silly me. I’ve recently rekindled my interest in roleplaying, though to be fair im like a new born babe all over again. It has been a long time since I have roleplayed but I’d like to start it up again for myself. I love the simple organization this site offers and would like to become a more active member here, unlike when I first made the account.
